Unlike another highly-touted Java EE textbook I read recently, this didn't leave me more confused than when I started it. And when it was published, in 2002, it would have been a competent, though not very good, introduction to Java EE. In 2018, however, even I know that Java web development makes heavy use of generics and (especially) annotations, features that were not even on the horizon when this book was written. And this book spends pages and pages on topics that would be clearer if summarized to a sentence or two, while passing over other topics that deserve a careful and subtle discussion with little more than a (long) code listing and essentially no explanation. Either of these two drawbacks would be reason enough to buy a different book, if you can find one without it; since there are reasonably recent textbooks, at least one of which is also better written, don't bother with this one.

Unfortunately, I wasted some money purchasing lesser-quality books before I found this one.The author has an obvious command of the topics; they are explained clearly and concisely. This might have been a good book when it was current, but any book that includes example code with "catch (Exception e) {}" is very suspect.I'd recommend looking for something else.
