Christine M. Rockledge began extensively researching Norwich State Hospital in 2009 and allied with the Preston Historical Society in 2011. This book is a glimpse back into history and no person is better fitted to tell the story of the Norwich State Hospital than Christine Rockledge whose heart is with all the patients who ever lived at the NSH, including my mom Rose Falcone and sister Janice Lynn Falcone. I find it comforting that someone lovingly remembers the patients and staff at NSH and has written a beautiful book with photographs that will forever be enshrined in memory. Thank you Christine Rockledge.
This is a must buy. It’s absolutely fantastic. The research is extensive, the pictures are superb. It really made me feel like I lived in the time that the hospital was full of life. Norwich State Hospital is an important part of our history and the author did a wonderful job bringing it back to life with the research and photos. She didn’t shy away from the bad times, and she didn’t turn it into a ghost story. She kept it accurate. I highly recommend getting yourself a copy and getting one as a gift as well. I know I did !
This book is an amazing collection of photographs and history. Images of America is my favorite series of books. I love the format and the amount of history in these books. This book was very well thought out and is a great addition to anyones library. Whether you are a local or a lover of asylum history this book delivers and will not disappoint. Enjoy!!
A very well documented book both through words and unseen pictures. Author has dedicated a huge part of her life to accurately research the Norwich state hospital. Great care has been taken to connect with former staff to paint a beautiful picture of what was once not only a place of employment but a place of family. A must read

This is one of the better titles in the Images of America series. I have found them uneven in quality. This one was rich with photographs and informative text. The author used every opportunity to show what she had learned about Norwich State Hospital, even to the extent that the photo captions were quite lengthy. I was happy to see this book come out because I have spent the last six years researching Norwich State Hospital from a different angle than this author did. Four of my ancestors were patients there. I acquired all their patient records from the Connecticut State Library. I have used them to try to show what life was like for my family members during the years that they were there, 1908-1958. I can't speak for NSH's more recent history, but is in the book about the first fifty years of the hospital is congruent with what I found in my own research.There were many photographs that I had never seen before, and believe me, I've looked. Many of them were from personal collections, including the author's own, and I enjoyed seeing them. That so many of them showed people on site at the hospital gives the sense of Norwich State Hospital as a living, thriving place.Another thing that I appreciated about the book was that there was no mention of ghost-hunting and no photographs that were taken while trespassing inside the buildings. There is so much of that on the Internet right now. It disturbs me to see Norwich State Hospital treated as a source of spooky entertainment, because it is so much more than that. It was both a good place (my grandmother was discharged after 10 years and remained there as an employee for 14 years) and a bad place (two of my ancestors died there).While I feel that this book is somewhat slanted from the point of view of employees, and not so much the patient experience, I am okay with that. I have learned enough about how NSH helped my grandmother adjust to life (despite her schizophrenia) for me to be comfortable with the way the hospital is presented in this book. It's difficult, for privacy reasons, to get the patients' perspective, but this is something I am writing about now. With persistence and luck, I hope to get my version of Norwich State Hospital published. I expect it will complement this book, not contradict it.I wish there was more information on the sources the author used. I realize that the author may not have had a choice because of the formatting constraints of this series. But as a researcher myself, I would have appreciated a list of sources in the back of the book. There were just a few times when I would have liked to know where the author got her information.There is one error in this book that in the scheme of things is small, but because it is close to my family experience, I am disappointed that it was made. On page 74, the author says that the Bryan Building used to be the "New London County Home for tuberculosis patients." It was not. It was formerly the New London County Temporary Home and was used to place neglected children who for some reason couldn't be placed in foster homes. I know this because my mother lived there from 1935 to 1941, from the age of ten until she was sixteen.Despite a few weakness that I have mentioned, I think this book is much-needed presentation of information about Norwich State Hospital, and I wouldn't hesitate to point to this book as a source.
