Athenian Steel is a superbly written if unlikely mix of historical and speculative fiction. The author has complete, accurate , and comprehensive knowledge of Athenian and Spartan history, especially the ghastly violence, into which he weaves a theme of extraterrestrial and extra-human strangeness and power. The result is both enlightening and challenging. It would have been easy to lose control of his chosen, diverse elements, but he makes it all work as absorbing fiction. I accepted the premise that super women from a parallel universe ended up by perverse fate in ancient Greece. The heroine is about as complex and intimidating as any I've encountered in fiction. Her relationship with mere mortals, especially the somewhat hapless Demosthenes, is fascinating, although it veers slightly toward tediousness in the middle passages of the book. Any slow down of the story is, however, but a blip. Extremely well rendered narratve acounts of battles, from both a strategic perspective and a nitty- gritty personal viewpoint, are breathtaking. They drive the story forward from the first pages to the last cliff hanger. If you read this book attentively, you will have gained an accurate understanding--and perhaps more importantly a concrete feeling for--the Hellenic world, plus the fun of a main character with superhuman powers and a time-travellers ability to slyly predict the future. A remarkable book.
Doing a good villain protagonist is really hard. The problem usually stems from making a book enjoyable to read while having a lead who might not be entirely likeable. In Athenian Steel this is accomplished mainly by having the book told through the lens of characters who are themselves not said villain protagonist but there is still another layer of difficulty here. Namely, unlikeable characters are still not that fun to read about. Additionally villain protagonists tend to be flat, as writing too much reason for their actions tends to make people question their villainess. This book really does this all very well.There are a lot of reviews saying how amazing this book is so I won't get into it. Just that I highly recommend it with one caveat. There is some sexual assault that might trigger people in the book. So be warned.
I am not normally a fan of eBooks, much preferring to read actual print. However, Amazon Prime's Reading program allows me to download and peruse books I would normally never get to see because they never make it to a bookstore shelf near me. (In my review, the product format references a paperback, which is incorrect. I read the kindle version available on Amazon Prime Prime Reader service.)P.K. Lentz's "Athenian Steel" was just such a risk I took, knowing nothing about the author or the series.And I have to say I was thrilled. I am a historian by training, avocation and vocation, and I found the historical references thoroughly enjoyable. The juxtaposition of classical history and science fiction was also engaging, and the battle narratives were top-notch!I won't bore you with a detailed description of the plot, (which I find distasteful in customer reviews anyway.) Why would potential readers want to know the plot line? Why would you want to have the narrative spoiled? (Reviewers, please stop this habit.) Instead, potential readers know this: A traveler from a far future that can navigate through many possible 'alternate universes' wherein history takes different turns arrives in Classical Greece during the earlier years of the Peloponnesian Wars. While the plot turns on the changes that then might take place, the true story (as P.K. Lentz relates) is the relationship between the major characters. I must admit that I was taken in and thoroughly manipulated in my own feelings towards the characters, (which is what any good writer wants, right?) and found myself cheering, jeering and rooting for them at different points of the novel. As the pages remaining shortened, I found myself regretting nearing the end, which to me illustrates a great book.In short, this book had everything that I love in a good sci-fi/speculative fiction novel, and I highly recommend it. I am ordering the next books in the series as soon as I finish this review.Well done Mr. Lentz! Well done.
