I really like this book, it doesn't tell you YOU ARE A MAN, it just helps you figure out this gender bubble we all live in, or it may confuse you more. But it helps to figure your self out more and I always feel better after getting through a section. It helps to assert who you are. My only problem is the previous owner used pen in some parts...But I ca white them out. Better than highlighting or big scribbles!
This is just an amazing book, especially for anyone who is questioning their gender. Kate Bornstein is just plain brilliant and has inspired me to seek the same gender outlaw status that she claims. If I was a professor of a sociology or psychology of gender class, this would honestly be one of the books I had on the syllabus, it's that good. It makes you question everything about gender, and I do mean everything, even the very foundation of the binary system we have assumed for so long.Whether you are questioning your gender or not, there is a lot offered by this book.
My Gender Workbook is an easy-to-read book but it's taking longer to get through than I expected due to the mental exercises Kate presents. I purchased this book hoping to understand more about gender and I'm finding the more I learn, the more confusing gender becomes to define. I recommend this book to anyone who feels gender should be challenged, or feels gender challenging. I also recommend it to anyone who feels there is no grey area in gender. My Gender Workbook will challenge you to analyze gender and everything the majority of us were raised to believe about it.
Best intro to gender - thoughtful, informative, and funny (check out the gender food pyramid!). Note: the first edition is best.
The workbook aspect of this title is what really sells it. I think there are some details in the book that sex/gender scholars might quibble over, but overall the power of this book is that it encourages you to do some self-reflection around gender and gender issues. Recommended!
I have always considered myself an open-minded, unassuming person, but after reading the first chapter of this book, I have come to realize that there is a world out there that I never conceived: A world of In-The-Middle. Bornstein shares hir unique gender enlightenment with us through this workbook that could be used for personal exploration or as a college textbook. One thing is for certain: Bornstein will challenge your notions about what "male" and "female" are!
Doesn't try to convert you to questioning yourself or anything like that, has a lot of fun activities that force you outside of your comfort zone and help you understand what those who DO question their gender identities go through.
This book has an interesting approach to helping you become more comfortable with your gender even if you are as straight as can be. My women's study class had us going through this book and it really helped me to see the way this stuff works in a better light.
