He has been an advocate for model-based systems engineering and a leader of the industry team that developed SysML from its inception through its adoption by the OMG.Alan Moore is an Architecture Modeling Specialist at The MathWorks. He has extensive experience in the development of real-time and object-oriented methodologies and their application. Alan was co-chair of the OMG's Real-time Analysis and Design Working Group and served as the language architect during the development of SysML.Rick Steiner is an independent consultant focusing on pragmatic application of systems engineering modeling techniques. He culminated his 29 year career at Raytheon as an Engineering Fellow, Raytheon Certified Architect and INCOSE Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP).Mr. Steiner has been an advocate, consultant, and instructor of model driven systems development for over 20 years. He has served as chief engineer, architect, or lead system modeler for several large scale electronics programs, incorporating the practical application of the OOSEM methodology and generation of Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) artifacts from complex system models.Mr. Steiner has been a key contributor to both the original requirements for SysML and the development of SysML specification. This is the foundational book for understanding SysML and MBSE. Between this book as a text and Delligatti's book (SysML Distilled) as a desk reference, you have all you need to succeed in this field.
While the book is a great explanation of modeling, it's got some issues as a electronic book. Tables that show different diagram notations are tiny and can't be enlarged. The formatting is rather awkward and there is only the front of the book table of context rather than a kindle TOC like other textbooks I have ebooks for.
Good coverage of the SysML modeling language with a couple of chapters on OOSEM. Lots of detailed examples to go with the theory. The layout is a bit tricky. The discussion and the diagrams can be separated by one or more pages which lead to some confusion and lot of page turning.
This book does contain all the necessary information to do SysML. One major complaint is on the organization and presentation with respect to the figures. Many, many times a figure is referenced which is 10, 20, or even 30 pages further into the book. Re-ordering the figures (which probably means re-configuring how each chapter handles a topic) would greatly enhance this book. I spend most of the time flipping pages to find the figure in question and it is mainly covering a topic which I have not gotten to yet.
It's Ok. Could have been more to the point on several occasions (compare a really short chapter to any longer one and it is evident). Would be great if the examples could be downloaded in HTML format or tool native format.
Great reference! Use it daily!
